The “Sun” Size System
“Sun” is a traditional Japanese unit of measure to denote length. 1 Sun is about 30.3 mm or about 1.22 inches. This system is used to describe the approximate size of Japanese Puzzle Boxes. Note that the sun system does not describe the width or height, or the size of the inside compartment. These dimensions are given on the web page for each box.

	Length in Inches	We consider 1 sun boxes (mame) 2, and 3 sun boxes to be “small” boxes. 4 sun boxes are “medium” size. 5 sun is the “standard” size. 6 sun is “large”, and 7 sun is “very large.”

Each and every Japanese Puzzle Box we sell here at Cleverwood is personally inspected and tested.
We carefully examine the outside of the box using a magnifying glass and a strong light. If the yosegi is chipped, if there is “tear-out” or uneven lacquer or a host of other flaws, the box is rejected.
Then we open the box and check it for proper operation - smooth moves, not too tight, not too loose, not warped. We count the number of moves. We examine the inside for cracks, glue squeeze out, and other flaws. We make sure that boxes that are supposed to be signed are signed.
If all is well a Cleverwood personal inspection tag is put in the box before it is closed and put back in it’s original wrapping.
