Eric lives in Colorado and introduced himself to Cleverwood
via email. Charlie met Eric at a Craft fair in Boulder, Colorado during July, 2000.
Eric made three sample puzzle boxes that were shown at the annual international
gathering of mechanical puzzle enthusiasts in August, 2000 - IPP20. His puzzle boxes were
enthusiastically received by the worlds greatest puzzle masters! Now,
Eric is producing his boxes in limited editions and offering them for sale here on this
page. Eric said he is serious about his box making. When asked to tell us about himself,
heres what Eric had to say (July, 2000):
I'm 16, go to High School, and have a 4.0 grade point average. Math and science
are my favorite subjects. I had just discovered puzzle boxes this last year, when I got my
first one for Christmas. Since then I've amassed a collection of 16 puzzle boxes,
including the ones I make myself. I think that my dad had also brought a simple one home
from Japan when I was very young. I want to continue collecting puzzle boxes and also
designing and making them myself.
I've always enjoyed mechanical puzzles, and after a while of collecting puzzle boxes, I
decided to try to build one. At first I just wanted to see if I could make one, so I used
a design based on pictures of the 10 move drawer box to make my first prototype. After I
saw that it was possible I started thinking about my own designs. The quality of my
woodworking improved greatly since then. I'm always thinking up new designs or mechanisms
for puzzle boxes.
Some of my other activities include soccer, and I play on my school team and on a club
team. I also snowboard during the winter. I have played the violin since I was very young.
This last summer I also started to experiment with holography, a process of creating 3D
images on a light sensitive plate with a laser. I exposed the holograms in an optics table
in my garage and developed them in one of the bathrooms in my house.
My plans for the future are not yet set. After High School I plan to attend college. I
don't yet know my major but it will probably be something in engineering or the math. I do
know that I love puzzles and woodworking and would like to continue making puzzle boxes no
matter what other interests I develop.
