12 Move 4 sun - “Sansui” Zougan

This is one of only two 4 sun size puzzle box available today that features Zoguan marquetry on the top and bottom rather than Yosegi overlay. The other is the 4 Move 4 sun Puzzle Box. Like that box, this box has Mt. Fuji on the top, and a flower on the bottom.

Yoshihiro Ishikawa is the Zougan artist.
Marked inside with the distinctive Izumiya Craft’s Studio mark, this high quality box has a very good working mechanism and a top quality finish.

This puzzle box comes gift boxed in a cardboard presentation box as shown.

A larger box that features a similar Zougan top is the 12 Move 5 sun Sansui box. A large, complex box with this theme is the 21 Move 5 sun Sansui box.

Customers sometimes ask why this box costs more than similar boxes. The answer is that besides the Zougan on the top and bottom, the sides of this box are solid walnut hardwood, not a yosegi overlay. This is rare in a Japanese Puzzle Box.
